Dr. Juan Meng is Professor of Public Relations and the Head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations in the College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Dr. Meng’s research specialization includes public relations leadership, leadership development, diversity and leadership in PR, measurement in PR, and global communication. Meng has published more than 75 refereed journal articles, scholarly book chapters and research reports on leadership-related topics. She has present at various panels, workshops, webinars, and symposiums and won different research awards nationally and internationally.
Meng serves on the national and international editorial advisory board for leading scholarly journals in public relations, including Journal of Public Relations Research, Public Relations Review, International Journal of Strategic Communication, Corporate Communications: An International Journal, among others. Her most recent book, Strategic Communication in a Global Crisis: National and International Responses to the COVID-19 Pandemic, was published by Routledge in 2023. It is part of the Routledge New Directions in PR & Communication Research Series.
Meng is the founder and director of UGA‘s Go Global Choose China program. She also founded the College’s Cooperative Education 3+1+1 programs with Shanghai Normal University and Shanghai International Studies University. Meng serves on the national advisory board of The Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations, Institute for Public Relations ELEVATE, and Ragan Communications and PR Daily. She served as the research vice chair on the executive leadership committee of the Educators Academy at Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in 2022. She is an elected member of the Arthur W. Page Society, the world’s leading professional association for senior public relations and corporate communications executives and educators.
In this talk, Dr. Meng will share her research journey in leadership in public relations from the perspectives of self-reflection, empowerment, and inspiration. The discussion around public relations leadership is gaining importance in all aspects related to strategic communication and its management and execution during challenging times, ranging from the effective public health communication during the global pandemic to the ethical challenges presented by the generative artificial intelligence and big data as part of the most recent technological trends. Therefore, Dr. Meng will introduce the background of several global and longitudinal research projects in public relations leadership she has led in the past, as well as some of the key research findings. Specifically, Dr. Meng will discuss the role of leadership in supporting racial and gender diversity and inclusion in the public relations profession by presenting some of the key findings from one of her most recent scholarly books, PR Women with Influence: Breaking Through the Ethical and Leadership Challenges. Participants are invited to join the discussion and share their views on the pressing need and the innovative approaches to make DEI an integral part of public relations and strategic communication practice, research and education.
