The College of Communication at National Chengchi University in Taiwan (the College) is now inviting applications for four full-time faculty positions. Since the establishment of its first department, the Department of Journalism, in 1935, the College of Communication has been the most prestigious communication institution in Taiwan. It has always been at the heart of communication discipline, leading the nation in communication research and education. The College is currently home to three departments, one MA program and one PhD program, one joint program (Digital Content and Technologies), two international Master's programs (International Master's Program in International Communication Studies and International Master Program in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies ), Executive Master of Arts in Communication, two research centers, XR Hub NCCU, the Center of Media and Information with student media outlets (Voice of NCCU & NCCU U-online News), and five specialized research labs. The College currently has 41 full-time faculty members and approximately 1,400 students.

With many Outstanding Research Award recipients, the College continues to push the boundaries of communication research. In the past few decades, it has cultivated numerous leaders and professionals in various communication industries, both at home and abroad. As a highly integrated institute, the College regularly reviews and modifies its curriculum and educational policies, fluidly adjusting and adapting to the ever-changing communication environment.

The College is now inviting applications for the positions of assistant/associate/full professors from candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: (1) Creative audiovisual production and image communication; (2) Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, and Digital Media; (3) Media Governance and Industry Studies.

  Applicants should demonstrate a long-term commitment to excellence in research and teaching in the mentioned areas. Applicants should possess a passion for teaching, be capable of handling the introductory courses offered by the College, assist the department in providing required or elective specialized courses, and demonstrate strong research abilities. Track records of high-quality research, teaching, and professional experiences in related fields will be highly valued. The successful candidates will join a diverse group of faculty members focusing on numerous aspects of communication research and practices, expected to play a significant role in the advancement and development of the College of Communication.

Specialties and class duties

Area of Interest A:  Creative Audiovisual Production and Innovative Application

 

Core Expertise:

We are now inviting applications for a full-time faculty position specializing in the creation and production of audiovisual media. The successful candidate will be able to develop students' storytelling and humanistic literacy skills. Candidates who can apply new technologies proficiently are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding academic research achievements and/or have received prestigious awards for creative work. They must also possess the ability to teach core courses in our College of Communication, as well as fundamental and advanced audiovisual production courses.

 

Proposed Courses:

The successful candidate should be able to teach one or more of the following courses: Audio-Visual Production Basics, Video Production, Filmic Directing, Interactive Multimedia Production, Digital Media Production, and other innovative courses that broaden communication horizons. Applicants may also propose programs according to their area of specialization.

Area of Interest B:  Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction, and Digital Media 

 

Core Expertise:

We are seeking candidates with expertise including, but not limited to, Digital Media, Interaction Design, new communication technologies (such as XR), Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Wearable Technology, Digital Storytelling, Behavioral Design, Social Computing, and User Experience (UX) Design. Applicants must possess international academic connections and demonstrate proficiency in English teaching and research publication. Priority will be given to candidates with experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research, supervising students in cutting-edge research, applying emerging technologies in design contexts, and fostering design-driven innovation.

 

Proposed Courses:

XR Design, Human-Computer Interaction, AI in HCI, New Communication Technologies, Information Design, Applications of Interaction Design, and other courses which will help students expand visions about interaction design, HCI, and digital media.

Area of Interest C: Media Governance and Industry Studies 

 

Core Expertise:

Candidates must demonstrate research expertise that integrates the core areas of media, industry, and governance. Additionally, applicants should possess specialized knowledge in at least one of the following fields:

 

(1) Media Industry Policy and Cultural Economics

The political economy of global media capital flows; competition in the production and distribution of news and entertainment content; international film and television co-production strategies and industry subsidy policies; or national cultural policies and the localization of international media platforms.

 

(2) Digital Infrastructure and Media Governance

The technological governance of streaming infrastructure, alongside research on the ecological transition and regulatory adaptation of traditional media in response to emerging digital platforms. Governance strategies for global OTT platforms, algorithmic accountability and transparency, or the impact of content moderation mechanisms on the news and entertainment ecosystem and the creator economy.

 

(3) News Industry Transformation and Platform Co-opetition Management

The structural transformation, market competition, and innovative business models of both global and local news industries, alongside a capacity for policy analysis regarding journalism sustainability. Anchored in public value, research should explore industry co-opetition and regulatory adaptation between transnational platforms and news media—encompassing issues such as news media bargaining codes, copyright and digital market regulations, platform accountability, and professional ethics.

 

(4) Transnational Media Production and Innovation

Research or professional experience in the collaborative development, production, commercialization of intellectual property (IP), or franchise expansion with international media platforms. Alternatively, expertise in virtual production, AI-enabled news production, interactive media, immersive storytelling, or the management of innovative media production projects.

 

III. Qualifications

A doctoral degree (Ph.D.) is required. While the degree need not be specifically in Communications, the candidate's research focus must align with the aforementioned core areas of expertise. Candidates with practical experience in the international screen industry are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants without a Ph.D., who has worked for more than 9 years and possess an exceptional track record, may be considered for appointment under the special provisions for "Professor of Practice" or equivalent professional tracks, subject to a case-by-case review.

 

Proposed Courses/ Modules:

The successful candidate will be expected to offer the following (or related) core modules at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels:

 

  • Film and Television Industries and Media Economics
  •  Digital Platform Governance and Media Ecology
  •  Global Screen Capital and Market Analysis
  • Screen Technologies and Innovative Production Management
  •  Special Topics in Media Infrastructure and Ecological Transitions

Qualifications

1. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in communication or other related fields or a Teacher Certificate of Assistant Professor (or above) issued by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan.

2. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research and have records of such research.

3. Applicants should have documentation of high-quality research consistent with the job position's specialty.

4. Applicants who have teaching experience or have participated in projects of governments and social institutions are preferred.

Applicants should supply the following application materials:

1. Curriculum vitae

2. A copy of the highest degree diploma. Those who have taken all the required courses, passed the qualifying exam and defended their PhD dissertation but have not received a doctoral diploma may submit a temporary one. The doctoral diploma is needed before the position's official start date.

3. A copy of the transcript for the highest degree. Applicants with a teacher certificate issued by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan do not need to submit a transcript.

4. A copy of the Teacher Certificate of Assistant Professor (or above) issued by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan, if applicable.

5. A certificate of incumbency, if applicable.

6. Three to five representative works, plus a statement describing current research areas and long-term research/teaching plans, as well as how they contribute to the advancement of the College, academia, and society.

7. Three sample syllabi with explanations about their originality and connection with the focus of the College. Applicants with teaching experience at colleges or universities must provide teaching evaluations or other supporting documents demonstrating teaching effectiveness.

8. Names and contact information of two references.

9. Applicants who have taught courses in English, please attach proofs of the course(s).

10. Other certifications or documents that may demonstrate additional qualifications.
