Professor Kuo Chen-yu, Distinguished Alumnus of NCCU College of Communication and
a Leading Figure in Asian Communication Studies, Passes Away at 85.

Professor Kuo Chen-yu, a distinguished alumnus of the College of Communication at
National Chengchi University (NCCU) and a pioneering figure in Asian communication
studies, has passed away at the age of 85.

Professor Kuo was the founding dean of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and
Information at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and also served as
the founding dean of NTU’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
Throughout his life, he was devoted to communication and social research. He is widely
recognized as a founding figure in the development of communication education in
Singapore and served as the founding editor-in-chief of the Asian Journal of
Communication.

Born in Fuchien in 1940 and grew up in Taiwan, Professor Kuo graduated from the
Department of Journalism at NCCU (22nd cohort, the fourth cohort after the university’s
reestablishment). He later pursued advanced studies in the United States, earning both his
master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology from the University of Hawai‘i and the
University of Minnesota, respectively. He began his academic career as an assistant
professor at the University of Wisconsin, and in 1973, he moved to the University of
Singapore, where he taught in the Department of Sociology and later served as department
chair.

For over half a century, Professor Kuo worked as both a scholar and a public intellectual,
offering profound analyses of society, language, and media. His contributions significantly
shaped the development of communication education in Singapore and left a lasting
impact on the nation’s cultural and educational landscape.

His life stands not only as an academic model of excellence but also as a source of great
pride for the College of Communication. We mourn the loss of an outstanding scholar and
a deeply respected alumnus.

We extend our deepest condolences and highest respect, and our heartfelt sympathies to
his family.
