College of Communication at National Chengchi University (NCCU) and Meta have announced their collaboration with the launch of XR Hub NCCU (傳播學院XR中心實驗室) on May 12th, 2023. The hub is Metas first XR-related collaboration project with a university in Taiwan, which is of landmark significance for industry-academia cooperation. With the donation of Meta, XR Hub NCCU will be equipped with 20 Meta Quest 2 VR headsets to provide a full range of immersive experiences, including augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). The hub’s launch aims to provide a sophisticated infrastructure for XR technology-related research and course development in the College of Communication at NCCU.

The College of Communication also partners with Meta to establish research scholarships to promote relevant studies in the metaverse, artificial intelligence, and social media. As a result, the College of Communication has become the only institution in Taiwan to offer scholarships sponsored by Meta. The scholarship encompasses two specific categories: degree scholarship and research scholarship. The degree scholarship grants NT$200,000 each to two master’s degree students annually. On the other hand, the research scholarship aims to incentivize master’s and doctoral students to publish their research in major international conferences and prominent journals to enhance their work’s visibility and academic impact.

Patrick Pan (潘先國), Head of Taiwan and Hong Kong at Meta and a distinguished alumnus of NCCU, said that Meta had continued cultivating XR talents in Taiwan since it established the first Metaverse XR Hub. Pan said, We have since established the Immersive Learning Academy and organized an AR Hackathon, which would allow creators to interact with each other and spark creativity. Today, the collaboration between Meta and NCCU hopes to take root in XR talent education on campus, which aims to help students develop XR-related research, reserve innovative energy, and energize the industry.”

For the unveiling ceremony of the newly established XR Hub NCCU, guests from Meta, including Simon Milner, the Vice President of Public Policy for APAC, Beth Ann Lim, Director of Policy Programs and Campaigns APAC, Patrick Pan, and Max Chen, Head of Public Policy Taiwan, were all present to express their support for this landmark industry-academia collaboration.

During the opening ceremony, Tsung-Jen Shih (施琮仁), the Director of the Media Research & Development Center at the College of Communication, warmly welcomed the guests. He took the opportunity to introduce the labs cutting-edge equipment and impressive features. Additionally, Shih expressed sincere gratitude to Meta and the Institute of Information Industry (資策會) for their support. I firmly believe this facility will serve as a fertile ground for nurturing future generations of VR experts, innovators, and researchers,” he said. He also extended his appreciation to Professor Ya-Lun Tao, who was in charge of the interior design of the lab, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment.

Furthermore, as part of the collaboration, the College of Communication and Meta will join forces to offer courses on emerging interactive technologies and digital content communication. Leveraging Meta’s expertise, these courses will feature both in-house lecturers and field experts. They will cover diverse topics related to the latest interactive technology trends, applications, regulations, and design. Their primary objective is to equip students with a deep understanding of cutting-edge technologies and their practical applications. Additionally, these courses aim to foster the development of future educators and researchers in interactive technology, nurturing individuals who can effectively promote and advance innovative communication technologies.

I am happy to see the direction that we are taking for the College of Communication, the program we have here, and all the exciting research we are doing, said Tsai-Yen Lee (李蔡彥), the President of NCCU. With more than 20 years of experience in VR and AI research, President Lee expressed his support for the College of Communication, the program, and the newly established cooperation project.

The collaboration between the College of Communication at NCCU and Meta has injected new vitality and momentum into Taiwan’s interactive technology education, research, and innovation. It will also help promote the development of Taiwan’s XR industry and make Taiwan one of the major players in the XR field in Asia and globally.
