Professor Jing Tsu (石靜遠), the esteemed John M. Schiff Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures and Comparative Literature at Yale University, will meet colleagues from NCCU College of Communication and College of Liberal Arts on July 3 2023, part of her research trip to Taiwan for her next book and other academic work.

 

Born in Taipei and a new migrant to America at the age of nine, Harvard-trained Professor Tsu has proved herself a leading scholar in the fields of East Asian languages, literature, and comparative literature. Her most recent book, "Kingdom of Characters: The Language Revolution That Made China Modern," released in 2022, has garnered widespread acclaim from international media outlets, including esteemed publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post. Furthermore, it has been named a Finalist for the highly prestigious Pulitzer Prize in the category of original non-fiction works.

 

On behalf of NCCU, Dean of the College of Communication at NCCU, Professor Yi-Ning Chen (陳憶寧), will be the host for Professor Tsus visit, joined by fellow NCCU colleague, Professor Shih-Chi Chin (金仕起), the Director of the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts at NCCU. Professor Tsu will have a closed-door roundtable meeting titled "The Impact of Emerging Technologies on the Humanities and Society: Focusing on Taiwan's Experience."

 

Were honored to host internationally acclaimed book author and scholar, Professor Jing Tsu from Yale University, especially in the research aspect of new technologies and their impact on media and communications, which is our newly-launched XR Lab NCCU 」(XR中心實驗室)all about, said Dean of College of Communication, Professor Yi-Ning Chen. This is also part of NCCUs goal to go global and be the meeting point for Asian and Western scholars altogether. Im glad our College of Communication can help the university in this aspect too”

 

Following the roundtable meeting, Professor Tsu will also pay a visit to the newly-launched XR Hub NCCU, a research platform combining virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies. The XR Hub NCCU aims to explore the potential applications of these emerging technologies in fields such as education, culture, and society. Through this visit and hands-on experiences, Professor Tsu will gain deeper insights into Taiwan's research and development achievements in the intersection of education and emerging technologies. NCCU College of Communication Professor Jih-Hsuan Tammy Lin(林日璇)and Tsung-Jen Shih(施琮仁)will present their research work to Professor Tsu during the guided tour for XR Hub NCCU.

 

During Professor Tsu’s visit to Taiwan, she will also meet senior officials, business leaders, and local XR creators to understand more and diverse perspectives about Taiwan’s economic and technological development as well as what makes Taiwan’s “soft power in the new era of AI and the metaverse. NCCU visiting scholar George Chen (陳澍), who is also a Yale World Fellow, will accompany Professor Tsu for her Taiwan visit, including her visit to NCCU College of Communication and College of Liberal Arts.
